Holiday News & Reviews in Christian Arts

Noelle, a film from the folks who brought us "One Night With the King" opens this Friday in selected theaters nationwide. Haven't been able to preview it, but here's the synopsis:
Father Jonathan Keene - a cold, impatient priest arrives in a tiny fishing village the week before Christmas to do what he does best: shut down a dying parish. But things take an unexpected turn as he becomes entangled in the various lives of the village's eccentric characters, including their beautiful librarian, the childlike priest he is displacing, and the magical experience of Mrs. Worthington's legendary Christmas Party, where everyone is welcome and anything is possible.
The film, written, directed and starring David Wall, is a testament to the tenacious work necessary to get films with wholesome Christian messages made in today's market. View the trailer above.

Visit Masterwork Productions at http://www.shoutlife.com/masterworks on Shoutlife, a safe and clean alternative to social networking. There are a number of Christian artists and performers represented on the site.

Looking for some great gift ideas for Christmas? Let me suggest two terrific books: "The Case for the Real Jesus" by Lee Strobel and "Home to Holly Springs" by Jan Karon. Strobel's latest in his apologetic series of excellent books takes six of today's most popular arguments against Christianity and Jesus' true identity and methodically examines them. The former atheist turned Christian after trying to disprove the claims in the bible lays out each argument, then shows that they don't stand up after thorough investigation. Every Christian needs to read this book.

"Home to Holly Springs" is the first of Karon's "Father Tim" novels which follow her popular Mitford series of novels which bring to life the delightful characters of Mitford, NC and their devoted and faithful Episcopal priest Father Timothy Kavanagh. I treasure the Mitford novels, not only because they're just a delight to read, but because of the wonderful, steadfast and inspiring faith of Father Timothy. God has used these books and Father Tim to inspire me in my own personal relationship with Lord a number of times. The Father Tim novels leave Mitford and focus on Father Timothy, which can only be encouraging reading.

Hi, My name is Allen Edge and I serve as board chairman of Christian Artists Network. We are the Illinois Chapter of Hollywood Prayer Network. HPN is a cutting edge ministry that ministers directly to and for 90028, the most influential zipcode in the world, Hollywood. Below you'll find a copy of the latest newsletter and information on how to become part of this impactful outreach. God bless.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF OUR HPN PRAYER TEAM,

Let’s make this the most joyous season of all, as we put up our decorations, tell others about our love for Jesus, and share His giving spirit. I pray that you will experience that, and as you pray for Hollywood, ask the Lord to touch the hearts of the hurting, lonely, and broken entertainment professionals. They need to personally experience the transforming love and joy of Jesus this Christmas. Thank you, thank you for your faithful prayers for our media peers! Here are some other ways you can be praying:

SUMMARY:

• Praise God for Jesus and his birth!
• Praise God for the opportunity to deliver five more Bibles to industry pros
• Continue to pray for the Writers Strike that forges on in Hollywood
• 168 Hour Film Project & Festival Director asks us to pray for their needs
• Pray for a powerful Christian outreach to hurting pros during the strike
• Pray for Christian Katie Whitlow and her relapse of Leukemia while pregnant
• Pray for Luke Vogel who was in a serious ski accident 2 weeks ago
• Hector sends updates from his HPN Local Chapter in Madrid
• Member Mark asks for prayer as he finishes shooting his low-budget film
• Check out the upcoming events for all the Hollywood ministries online at HPN

PRAISES:

• Jesus was miraculously born, died for us, rose from the grave to conquer death, and is living among us! We have so much to Praise Him for this Christmas!

• HPN is delivering Bibles to five more decision-makers and celebrities this week for Christmas who may never have had or even seen a Bible before in their lives. We praise God for the opportunity and ask Him to use those Bibles as tools to bring these five people to Him.

UPDATES:

• Please continue to pray for the Writers Strike that forges on through the holidays in the entertainment industry. There was a hopeful moment when negotiations started back up, and now we’re back to square one with the second impasse between the studio executives (AMPTP) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA). People are beginning to get scared as their income has stopped and the weeks go on. We ask God to intervene with His justice, logic, fairness and grace, and that He uses this time to touch the hearts of thousands of people who think this is bad, but don’t know that only God can turn it in to good. The HPN staff has been reaching out to the strikers by handing out water bottles and offering prayer. We are so encouraged by the positive response and ask that you join us in praying that our time at the picket lines can be eternally significant.

• The 168 Hour Film Project and Festival has begun taking registrations for film teams who are participating in the Feb. 2008 competition. Please pray for John Ware and the 168 team as they struggle with staffing, finances, and resources for this year’s project. They have a matching grant that expires at the end of December and if they don’t get the additional matching monies they lose the grant. Let’s lift them up in prayer as they move forward in faith. Find out more info at: www.168project.com.

REQUESTS:

• Agent Kim Dorr has had a burning feeling to reach out to all of the people who are negatively impacted by the strike. Her vision is to have a weekly gathering for anyone and everyone needing encouragement, prayer, a friend, or a place to commiserate. HPN has joined her, along with other writers, producers and industry friends, in putting together this gathering place – run by Christians as an outreach to the community during this difficult time. Please pray with us that the Lord can use Kim and us to personally touch the lives of many professionals who are scared, lonely and struggling through this strike. We want Him to be lifted us as our peers feel pulled down.

• Please pray for Christian author Robert Whitlow, his wife Kathy, and their daughter-in-law Katie who has had a relapse of Leukemia. She is four months pregnant and will not be having any cancer treatments for the sake of the baby. She needs a miracle. Please pray for Katie and their whole family as she faces tough decisions in this season.

• Please pray for Karl Vogel, VP of Echostar, and specifically for his son Luke, who was in a serious ski accident 2 weeks ago. Luke fractured 5 vertebrae and has a contusion on his spine. He has no movement in his legs and limited movement in his arms and the family doesn’t know what paralysis will go away and what will remain. Please pray for Luke and God’s miraculous healing hand on him in intensive care. With God, nothing is impossible.

REQUESTS FROM HPN MEMBERS:

• Hector sends updates from our HPN Local Chapter in Madrid. With very little finances, he and Lilli have seen amazing provision for their music and dance schools at the Aslan Theatre Workshop and Arts School. Their small staff is seeing God bring people, resources and opportunities to share Him with the artists in their growing community of 75 current students! The theatre classes will begin in January if some specific needs fall into place. Please pray for their wonderful arts ministry, needed finances, staff and strength in Madrid, and Hector and Lilli’s effectiveness as they bring the love of Christ to this creative community in Spain! Check out: www.aslanperformingartscentre.org.

• Member Mark Y. asks for us to join him in prayer as he finishes shooting his low-budget film “Least” – a true story about the first black student at an all-white seminary. Mark wants to please God, do the best he can do, and handle the small finances, weather and schedule challenges with wisdom, peace and joy.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

• You can always check out our list of other Hollywood ministries and what they’re up to by clicking on this page of the HPN website: http://www.hollywoodprayernetwork.org/resources/entertaimentministries.php.

• Please continue to pray for HPN as we face a shortfall for 2008. We are cutting back on our staff in order to meet our immediate budget and ask that you join us in praying that we continue to expand the vision of praying for the world’s most influential mission field, without compromise or losing touch with people because of a lack of time, people, finances or resources. God has propelled us lately into the news and the awareness of people around the world. So we know that our work must continue. Let’s all watch how He miraculously supplies for us. We’re excited to see Him do what only He can do, and we thank Him for it already.

Have a joyous Christmas and may you start the New Year with increased faith, strength, hope and love! And know that He is ALWAYS with us.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!
